Chronos

About the project

The Objective: Create an experience to be used specifically at events, allowing 10-20 people to participate at the same time.

The Result: The project was cancelled as the design of the experience did not pass a usability test.

Our client wishes to remain anonymous, but was an entertainment event provider for VR team building and birthday parties. They saw that many of their players had loved playing Superhot VR, and wanted to develop a multiplayer, arena-scaled version. They also wanted a game that would work for team building and birthday party events, with 10-20 players participating at the same time.

Hence, we had to build an augmented reality component, where players could join the game with their smartphones. A key technical challenge was to support networked physics with a time-slowing mechanic, which our engineers ultimately made work. Unfortunately, after extensive early user-testing, both our client and our UX designers determined that a time-slowing concept was overly complex with multiple players, especially kids.

Although Chronos never made it past the pilot stage, our quick iterations and early user testing prevented large amounts of time and money from being wasted.

Technologies Used: Unity, Photon Networking, Vuforia SDK, HTC Vive Pro, Zotac VR GO
